Until last month I had never heard of Calvados, which is best described as an apple brandy derived from crisp, apples grown in the Normandy countryside. This week 18th – 24th October is National Calvados Week – which marks the start of the apple harvest for Calvados production. The week long celebration of all things Calvados; expect special recipes, food pairing, cocktails and tastings are scheduled to take place in London, Liverpool, Manchester and Edinburgh in over 100 bars, shops, supermarkets and independent off licenses including 155 Bar & Kitchen, The Hawksmoor, Waitrose and Gerry’s of Soho.
Calvados Père Magloire is considered the worlds’ leading Calvados brand with its Père Magloire VSOP, XO and 12 Year Old – known as the finest Calvados liquid available.
Père Magloire is featured extensively throughout National Calvados Week especially in the form of cocktails – the Père Magloire Calvados Sour is particularly pleasant, for something a little different head down to 155 Bar & Kitchen – The Vinyl Lounge, Clerkenwell, London, for the Père Magloire Calvados’ tasting menu. Chef Tom Luck’s menu includes: Père Magloire VSOP Calvados paired with baked fresh oysters, Calvados Père Magloire VSOP & cream reduction, brioche to start. Followed by the rich golden flavours of the Calvados, immersed in Chef Luck’s Glazed pork belly, Baked apple purée, Celeriac, Heritage carrots, Crackling, Jus paired with a Calvados Père Magloire 12 Year Old. For a sweet conclusion, try the Pressed apples, Puff pastry, Caramel, Vanilla ice cream paired with Calvados Père Magloire XO – for the perfect digestif.
So for a fun way of getting (part) of your five –a –day, celebrate National Calvados Week albeit at a bar, restaurant or simply chilling at home.
Père Magloire Calvados Pays d’Auge VSOP Brandy £22.49. Père Magloire Calvados 12-year-old £36.50 both available from Waitrose Cellar.
