Breathe….And again. Is it bad to say that I can’t record the last time I kept track of my breathing? That’s the beauty of Pilates. After the hustle and bustle of working in Central London, I embarked on a short walk to where I would endure Body Control Pilates’ Intro to Pilates class – a straight hour of Pilates – at this point I certainly wasn’t in the mood for anything active, or too relaxing like yoga; I was seeking something in between.

The venue situted on Little Russell Street is a secret gem located behind a rush hour congested street. I came prepared dressed in my favourite work-out get up of leggings/vest, bare foot, and clutching a bottle of aloe vera. The class was intimate, friendly, and full of breath ready to be released! – the energy from the group was so much more relaxed towards the end thanks to our breath releasing exercise. No one had any physical impediments as far as I’m aware; I think most of us were afflicted with general stress induced by living and working in a frenetic city, along with not taking time to focus on our neglected muscles.Body Control Pilates -StandingSideReach (2)

Lynne Edmonstone, the instructor had the loveliest voice and such a warm aura about her – she led us through a variety of different exercises and warned us about the importance of looking after our spines. My days vary, from walking around a lot to sitting down for hours; and not being aware of how to properly look after my posture was a worry of mine.Body Control Pilates -CurlUp (2)

Each exercise taught was heavily beneficial in helping me retain good posture, but in the end, it all comes down to time. How much time are we truly willing to give our bodies; the organs and bones that we can switch on and off whenever we like? To use a well –worn adage – prevention is better than cure. Pilates should be for everyone! So try and make time for simple regular exercises that can provide huge lasting benefits……and remember to keep track of your breathing.

A six week block of Intro to Pilates classes cost from £71 (early bird/bookings) and £84 (standard cost). For bookings and further information please visit: www.bodycontrolpilates.com
