A day in my working life, an occasional series providing an insight into how entrepreneurs spend a typical working day. This week, Greg Duggan and Damien Kennedy from Wheyhey.

Wheyhey is the world’s first and best selling protein ice cream. We started the company in Jan 2013 and the past two years have been a whirlwind! As any company founder will agree, no two days are the same and there’s never a shortage of surprises lurking around the corner! A typical working day can be as follows:

6:30: A gym session is the best way to start the day as it gets your mind focused and your body in work mode! We head to our local for an hours workout before heading to our office in South London.

8:00: Before the workday starts, we make a hearty breakfast rich in protein to replenish aching muscles. We’re lucky to have in house chefs who create some incredibly innovative recipes using Wheyhey. This morning, blueberry protein ice cream smoothie is on the menu, one of our favourites!

8:30: Team meeting time. In the summer, we hold these in the Wheyhey hot tub, although meetings tend to go on a while longer when we do! We re-group to go over key successes (and sometimes messes!) and set priorities for the week.

9:00: A quick check of emails as we prefer to get all the key emails replied to before the day of meetings begins. As a small team, we encourage as much face-to-face dialogue as possible to avoid drowning in emails.

10:00: The meetings begin! We have a call with our PR agency to get an update on coverage and leads. We discuss the interview with an online magazine that we’re doing later today.

10:30: We hold a senior management meeting to chat through our strategic sales and marketing plans. Things change all the time in a start up – new opportunities and challenges present themselves on a near daily basis, so it’s really important that we catch up regularly and strike while the iron’s hot. One of the best advantages of being a young business is the associated nimbleness. It gives us a competitive edge over more established competitors.image

11:15: Time for a factory and production update. We jump on a call with our manufacturer in Ireland and go through our forecasts and innovation pipeline. As pioneers in the protein ice cream making world, innovating can be a challenge.  There’s no pre-existing manual, in fact no one’s done what we’re doing so we’re constantly learning through trial and error. It’s one of the most exciting challenges we face at Wheyhey and it feels good to be paving the way in our industry.

12:30: Lunchtime and today it’s a plate of grilled chicken, avocado, steamed broccoli and wholegrain rice. Naturally topped off with a tub of  Wheyhey chocolate ice cream. It’s hot outside and Wheyhey is healthy, so we don’t need to justify having already eaten two tubs before 1pm!

13:15: We have a phone interview with a national magazine online publication. We love doing interviews as it’s one way that we can talk directly to our consumers and give them a first hand insight into our brand and why we’re doing what we’re doing.

14:00: I (Greg) jump onto some tweets and Instagram posts. I’ve always believed in the power of social media and it’s really helped us build our brand since day one. I love talking to our fans one-on-one and Twitter especially is a great way for me to do this. No matter how big a company gets, I believe founders/senior management should always be in touch with their consumers in some capacity – our fans are at the heart of everything we do after all!Wheyhey -Chocolate-FrontLid

15:00: We’ve just had a delivery from our friends at Nutri Bullet so I (Damien) mix up a quick healthy chocolate shake, you can find all our recipes on our blog, to keep me going through the afternoon.

15:15: Our international business is growing rapidly so we liaise with our partners abroad all the time. We jump on a call with Sweden and Denmark to discuss growth and targets and route to market strategies.

16:15: Time to go and meet a major retailer to get them on board the healthy Wheyhey journey. It wasn’t so long ago that we were traipsing around London armed with a cool bag, direct selling, so it’s a good reminder of the progress we’ve made so far.

17:30: Odeon here we come. We’re heading down to the Kingston cinema to do some sampling! Let’s see what tomorrow brings.
