Diabetes can truly be considered the disease of modern life – despite the discovery of insulin in the early 20th century, the number of people diagnosed with diabetes continues to rise. Type 1 Diabetes develops in people under the age of 35 while Type 2, also known as adult onset diabetes usually occurs after 40. Type 2 diabetes may also be associated with obesity and pregnancy.

How to Recognise Diabetes

There are various symptoms which may indicate a problem with blood sugar levels – the only way to be sure is to have a blood test carried out by your doctor. Symptoms which you should look out for include:

Excessive thirst
Frequent urination
Fatigue, weakness or apathy
Halitosis (bad breath)

Untreated diabetes can lead to blindness, amputations, coma and even death. If you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms, see your doctor immediately and have your blood sugar levels checked.
