Tequila has undergone something of a transformation; it is no longer synonymous with the ‘firewater’ we may have consumed back in the day, Tequila has now evolved into premium brands imbibed by those with a discerning palate. Sarah Goodwin and Millie Wilson, founders of relatively new start -up Tea & Tequila,  are purveyors of premium Tequila, along with distinctive Mexican furniture and lifestyle products. Furthermore, the Tea & Tequila business model is based on a symbiotic exchange of the exporting of British products and the importing of Mexican products, the name Tea & Tequila is an apt description.

Sarah and Millie tend to make frequent trips to Mexico due to the nature of their business, fortunately for me, they both  took time out of their busy schedule to answer some questions.

1. When did you first visit Mexico?

Sarah: I moved to Mexico in 2011 for a year as part of my Spanish degree at Bristol University, this is where I first fell in love with the Mexican culture and lifestyle.

Millie: I first visited Mexico in April 2014 and found that the culture, lifestyle, and people exceeded my already high expectations formed from Sarah’s ever-growing passion for the country. I returned to the UK with a similar obsession which instigated weekly Spanish classes and getting involved with a Mexican network in London.

2. What inspired you to launch Tea & Tequila?

Sarah: Having lived on and off in Mexico for three years I was constantly taking home gifts to people back in the UK and realised that there was a huge variety of Mexican products that would go down well in the UK market and vice versa while living abroad there was great interest in British Heritage and I saw a gap in the market for the kind of food, drink and home products that I wanted to explore and try to rectify myself.

Millie: When Sarah pitched the idea of trading luxury products between Mexico and the UK and asked me to be her London based partner, I immediately jumped on board and since then we haven’t looked back.

3. How does Tea & Tequila differ from other brands in the market?

Tea & Tequila is bringing interesting, exciting new niche products to the British market that bring a whole new edge, no cliché Mexican tourist gifts,  purely authentic and design items bringing a burst of colour to British interiors. Likewise we will also be trading and taking British products to Mexico in 2015. 2015 is the year of UK in Mexico and Mexico in the UK, both cultures are being boosted and celebrated across the Atlantic.image

4. How is the attitude towards Tequila changing within the UK?

Sarah: Tequila is becoming more of a sophisticated drink, cheap tequila shots will always remain but now Tequila and Mezcal are being introduced to a high-end market, where sipping and savouring the rich exciting flavours can be hugely enjoyed. It is also a perfect mixer for cocktails in all seasons. Alacran Tequila and Mezcal is one of the most exciting brands to be hitting the UK at present, a key selling point is the chic design of the bottles.
